Keenen Ivory Wayans in person and learn how you can make positive changes to your community at the free LANI Forum at USC

What do you like about Southern California? The weather? The diversity of the people who live here? The beach?

And what do you like about your neighborhood? The restaurants? The architecture? The history? The taco trucks?

Now, if you had a magic wand, how would you make your neighborhood better? Would you like to have healthier restaurants? How about making your community greener? Make it more bike-friendly? Maybe adding something unique to the main street?

The Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative, LANI for short, is an organization dedicated to teaching regular people how to change their communities. One of the best ways they accomplish this is through the LANI Community Forum. The LANI  Community Forum takes place at a great venue (with delicious free food) where people gather to learn, network, share ways to make our communities better.

The Sixth Annual Community Forum will take place on Thursday, May 15, 2008 from 8 am till 2:30 at the USC Davidson Conference Center.  The USC Davidson Conference Center is located at 3415 S. Figueroa Street in Los Angeles.

As a special treat, the one of our favorite screen stars, Keenen Ivory Wayans, will share his experiences as the Keynote Speaker.

Registration starts at 8. At 9, attendees are treated to a delicious breakfast while listening to the keynote talk. At 10:30, attendees go to the SESSION 1 discussion of their choice. There will be a break at noon for a light complementary lunch. At 1, the SESSION 2 workshops begin.
Some of the sessions we are looking forward to are:

  • SOLVING THE SUPERMARKET DILEMMA:
HOW TO BRING FRESH, HEALTHY GROCERIES TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
  • BICYCLING IN LA:
WHAT EVERY CYCLIST NEEDS TO KNOW
  • NUISANCE NO MORE:
HOW TO RID YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD OF PROBLEM BUSINESSES

CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Parking is free in USC’s STRUCTURE #2, close to 3533 Flower Street.

The night will feature music by Cita La Muñeca Rota, Ricardo Ochoa, and the rock cello player Semyon Kobialka. There will be krump dancing by Buckworld One. The Art adorning the walls will be from the famous Chicano artist GRONK & the pop artist William Deutsch and to round out the party spirit, D.J. Stephen Hawking to discuss black holes at Caltech in Pasadena - free admission!

Image of black hole from the NASA website

This is your chance to be in the same room with one of the greatest minds on the planet.

Professor Stephen Hawking will be discussing using a black hole as a door to a different universe on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 8:00 PM at the Beckman Auditorium at the California Institute of Technology. Caltech is located at 332 South Michigan Avenue in Pasadena.

This event is free. No reservations are required. We would recommend getting there EARLY  to get one of the 500 coveted seats in the auditorium that will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis.  This talk will be geared as much as possible for a general audience.

The black hole is one of the most interesting phenomema in the universe. The theories associated with the black hole’s ability to warp time have led some to believe that through black holes, one can travel back and forth in time. CLICK HERE to listen to a great segment from This American Life for a great story that revolves around black holes.

More about Stephen Hawking from the Caltech website:

Stephen Hawking holds the Lucasian Professorship at Cambridge University (the professorship once held by Sir Isaac Newton) and is the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Scholar at Caltech. For the past 45 years he has been a world leader in research on black holes, the birth of the universe, and the nature of space, time, and gravity.
