CONCRETE FREQUENCY at the Walt Disney Concert Hall – The City Reflected in Music

The Los Angeles Philharmonic presents CONCRETE FREQUENCY,  a festival assembled to examine and celebrate the elements that define a city. The events take place from January 4 till January 17, 2008.

Not to be missed in this series will be:

Walt Disney Concert Hall becomes the living room for the city with this intimate evening, as these urban troubadours share the songs that have become the lo-fi soundtrack to our inner-city existence — joy, urgency, depression, and heartache expressing the raw emotions contained and cultivated in the city.

  • MAN MACHINE IN THE DIGITAL CITY will feature performances by Cornelius and Plaid on Thursday, January 17th at 9pm . This night of swirling sounds will surely trigger something deep within your urban consciousness. From LAPhil.com:

Tokyo’s Cornelius delivers electronic psychedelia while dissecting layers of technology, urban culture, and pop music. Going beyond techno, British duo Plaid produces digitalized abstract musical art, from ominous crackles to beat-heavy melodies. Don’t miss this rare, live performance, featuring cut-up sonic assemblages and wildly experimental visuals.

ollin2.jpg

Culture Clash will be hosting the Pocho Night of Power on December 21, 2007. Lalo Alcaraz and Estaban Zul, members of The Pocho Hour of Power on KPEK will also be on hand to add to the humor of the night. There will be live performances by Ollin (pictured above), Mezlah, Azlan Nation, and Run for Cover. The DJs HuiZil and Papalotl will be spinning the tunes before and after the sets. The event will take place at 110 S. Garfield in East Los Angeles with the doors opening at 9 PM. Tickets are 10 bucks presale and 12 bucks at the door.

What is pocho, you ask? Pocho is a not-so-nice term used by Mexicans to label Mexican-Americans. Yet, in recent years pochismo has become a source of pride and power for those living in El Norte.

Don’t worry, the festivities are open to anyone, pochos and non-pochos alike wanting to have a good time on a Friday night.

More about nacimientos from The Latino Urban Forum:

Nacimientos, or nativity scenes, is a tradition that many Latino throughout Latin America follow during the Christmas season.  This tradition takes place in the streets of LA where many immigrants and  multi-generational families spend countless hours creating Nacimientos in their front yards, porches, on roofs, as well as in the home. Nacimientos range in size, complexity, and creativity. Some can be a simple scene of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus to elaborate landscapes with tinsel waterfalls, sparkling lights, and hundreds of pieces. Each Nacimiento reflects the creator’s devotion to Christmas and can be very personal in nature. For many Latinos, the building of the sets begins the day after December 12th, which is the feast day of Our lady of Guadalupe and  they stay up until January 6th, when the three kings arrive with gifts for the new born king.

Click here to listen to ”Epiphany in Los Angeles,” a National Public Radio segment that aired in 2003 about the Nacimiento Tour from the popular NPR show “All Things Considered”.
