El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument and El Pueblo Park Association will celebrate the unveiling of the newly restored Statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at 4 P.M. in the Avila Adobe. The statue, over two centuries old, was meticulously restored by the Los Angeles artist, Ernesto de la Loza.
From the Olvera-Street.com website:
The Dark Virgin, Patron of Mexico and the Americas, served as a bridge between our indigenous and Spanish roots. The native Mexicans identified the dark Virgin who spoke in Náhuatl with the goddess Tonantzin and celebrated her with indigenous rites within the framework of the Catholic Church.
